Ahmed is an excellent teacher of ultrasound and regional anaesthesia. From our first sessions together, he was able to simplify how ultrasound works, common pitfalls of using the machine and how to best get an image on the screen. Why is this lecture important?
• Ultrasound has been used to image the human body for over half a century.
• Today, ultrasound (US) is one of the most widely used imaging technologies in medicine. It is portable, free of radiation risk, and relatively inexpensive when compared with other imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance and computed tomography.
• US images are tomographic, i.e., offering a “cross-sectional” view of anatomical structures. The images can be acquired in “real time,” thus providing instantaneous visual guidance for many interventional procedures including those for regional anesthesia and pain management.
• Clinicians need to understand the indications, clinical pearls, and pitfalls of each procedure to avoid potential complications and Medicolegal consequences.
• In this lecture, we describe some of the fundamental principles and implications of US technology that are relevant to the Medical practitioner and undergraduates.
